Surf Lifesaving is an amazing activity for growing a child's confidence, knowledge and skills in a beach environment. Fun activities and friendships are just a few of the benefits your child can enjoy at Glenelg. Our Nippers participate in a structured program of beach running, beach flags, wading, surf knowledge, sun safety, first aid and a variety of fun learning activities throughout the session. Parents are encouraged to participate and join in the program.
Children can become a Nipper from the age of five (5) years and start learning about surf awareness and safety through our surf education programme. Glenelg Nippers are placed in Age Groups, starting at Under 7s (U7s) and run right up to Under 14s (U14s). The age group of your child is their age as on the 1st of October. i.e. If they are 9 years old on the 1st of October then they are in the Under 10s age group.
At Glenelg the emphasis is on having fun whilst developing skills. As the children get older they are able to participate in board paddling, surfing, wading, swimming, sprinting and other fun activities and games.
Practicing these skills helps develop confidence in the surf environment.
Nippers from U9s - U14s are able to test their skills against competitors from other clubs at a series of Surf Life Saving Carnivals held throughout the metropolitan area over Summer. Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) also conduct Junior Development Camps in every state as well as the National Junior Surf League & Development Programme.
Glenelg Nippers in the U13s age group will sit for their Resuscitation Certificate which leads into the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC), which is undertaken at U14s level. The SRC award trains candidates in rescue skills, first aid and patient management, resuscitation and a theoretical component exploring knowledge and surf awareness. Upon completion of the SRC the U14s Glenelg Nippers are able to commence Beach Patrol duties on Glenelg Beach in a supervised environment.
The Glenelg SLSC Youth Development Programme (Young Guns) takes over from the U14s age group to ensure an enjoyable transition from the Junior to the Senior areas of the club. This programme involves many different youth activities both around the club but will often involve activities with all clubs.
Glenelg SLSC provides the opportunity to those new to lifesaving to try out the activities through our Come-and-Try sessions. Participants are allowed 2 free sessions with the Glenelg SLSC before committing funds for membership. This is available to any children from U7s through to the U14s. Please visit our volunteers at the registration table and ask about these sessions.
On behalf of the Glenelg SLSC we hope that you will come and enjoy the Surf Life Saving season with OUR club!
