Ironman

The  Iron Man / Iron Woman section is relatively new to the club. In the mid  1980's Laurie Klass formed a small group of competitors, including  Clayton & Nigel Hayball, Rob Lynch, Kerry Forrest and the explosive  Bonaguro brothers (Tim & Luke) to tackle one area that had  previously not really had any exposure at Glenelg. The beginnings of  this section saw Glenelg represented at State level in Open Iron Man  finals, Uncle Toby Challenges as well as the Kellogg's series. However  it was not until the introduction of Trevor Holmstrom to the Iron Man  section in the mid 1990's that things really started to move. With  great tenacity and vigour Trev built the Glenelg Iron Man section  enthusiastically. Dan Holmstrom took on the leadership role at the  outset. Through years of persistence Dan captured Three Open Iron Man  Titles while at the same time Tanya Presgrave led the way for the women  with three successive Open Iron Woman titles. A dominance Glenelg  continued for a number of years.

Success breeds success, in that time the Holmstrom family relocated to Queensland  and the duties fell to Asst. Iron Man coach Simon Phin in 1998.  Following on from the leadership role of Dan Holmstrom and Tanya  Presgrave a new bunch of competitors completed the ranks. Andrew and  Kate Simpson, David and Craig May, Jo Black, Shaun Nayda, Sarah  Goodwin, Amanda Elson and the young Matt Bowbridge led the charge for a  new generation. Simon followed in Trev's path furthering the  development of successful training methods and commitment to planning  and visioning with athletes. Jo Black followed in the path of Dan  Holmstrom with successive Iron Man titles in 2000 and 2001.Amanda Elson  dominated the 2000 season with a convincing win in the 2000 Iron Woman.  After a magnificent season in 2001 for Sarah Goodwin, which saw Sarah  dominate a strong field, she was one of three female Glenelg finalists  (Amanda Elson, Nicky Wehrmann & Sarah Goodwin) in 2001 with a  strong third.

In  2002 Simon Phin stood aside as Iron Man coach and relocated to  Freshwater SLSC in NSW. Today Amanda Tidswell brings experience in  success and commitment to excellence in training and competition to the  Iron Man section. Amanda has a huge amount of experience and draws on  her own competitive streak in ensuring the Iron Man section will  rebuild to a dominant force in the upcoming seasons.
