Swim

Our  first success in the water area was achieved by our inaugural Club  Captain, Fred Feneley during the early 1930's. In the post war era,  (1945- ), John Rice, (who was still active within the club 60 years  later), achieved an Open Surf Race Team Title. However it was a long,  long wait until success again at the turn of the 1990/91 season when  Alex Macorig gained the first surf race medal in 40 years, a bronze.  What followed was a un-prece dented string of success by Glenelg  Swimmers. Adam Wylie won three Open Surf Race Titles in succession,  while one of our most distinguished recruits Sarah Goodwin, won two  Open Female Surf Race Titles until being beaten by team mate Kathryn  Ware in 2001. The brothers of Charlie and Jo Black, Rab (Jnr.) and  Rocky Blair became the back bone of the Glenelg Open Surf Race Team  which held the title (Open Surf Team Champions) a record nine times.  The Glenelg SLSC Swim Section was the dominant force throughout this  period fielding winning teams in every division of championships,  (often with an A and B team medalling). Joined by noted swimmers Shaun  Nayda, Randall Hobbs, Chris McFarlane, Christian Coronica and Matt  Bowbridge in the men's, while in the female division Sarah Goodwin,  Tanya Presgrave, Amanda Elson, Kate Simpson, Nicki Wehrmann, Ann-Marie  Gibbons and Kathryn Ware proved to be a complimentary dominating force.

Jo  Black battled many Open Championships coming away with nail biting  seconds. In 2001 his convincing win in the Open Belt Race, (teamed by  Luke Hildyard, Ben Clements, David Bowman and Simon Phin), was a just  reward and the Clubs first Open Belt Title in 50 years. Of note was  Rocky Blair's win in the U/18 Belt and Rab Blair (Jnr) medalling in  both Open and U/18 in the same year.

Glenelg  swimmers were coached by some of Adelaide's leading pool coaches,  including, Paul Higgs, Graham Brown, Rab Blair Snr., Gavin Hill and Rod  Ross. In the surf, Trevor Holmstrom and Simon Phin led a dynamic group  in surf swimming spending hours in all conditions, challenging and  pushing each other to success during the 1990's.

GSLSC  endured a few lean years in the swimming racks due to the retirement of  many swimmers and relocation of competitors and the transition from our  old club to the new.  Today Swim Captain Geoff Harvey has a great base  of swimmers training with more joining all the time.  In 2006/2007  Glenelg will look to return to a strong swim section through the  guidance and direction of Geoff Harvey.
